Rapport Building
The first thing I would normally do is assess the student's current performance - identify his/her interest in the subject and weakest points in the particular subject. I think it's important to also set realistic and achievable goals. Sometimes breaking down targets to an achievable bite-size portion first would give the student the encouragement he/she needs to then set higher expectations for themselves. I think managing expectations is important.
