Tuition/Teaching Experience
I have taught a group of primary 1 and 2 students for 2 subjects, Maths and English.
Each class is about 4 to 6 students.
Other than teaching studies, I coach martial arts most of the time.
Students ranging from primary school level to tertiary level.
I assist my parents who are coaches too. They teach in MOE schools.
I have also taught private Wushu classes to 3 students.
Currently, I am a part time assistant teacher at AWWA where my job scope is to aid the form teacher of the particular class and take care of the students who have multiple disabilities.
Most of my teaching experience come from the physical area however, I am able to understand and communicate with students better through my past experiences interacting with different students of different ages.
I am able to give night classes on weekdays and morning/afternoon classes on weekends.
Duration about 1h 30mins will be ideal as long hours will drain the students and may lead to poor concentration and tiredness.
I prefer to keep the size of the class small maximum up to 3, as I feel that there will be better focus the students without the amount of time. It will be more efficient and less distraction for the students too.
Rapport Building
It is always through communication and observation.
I always try to understand the student, his/her background etc.
Breaking the ice is the first crucial step. As this will allow better communication between the student and I.
Through this, the students will be more open and share their problems whether school work or non-school work. This will make me more approachable as the student will not only see me as their teacher but also someone whom they can trust and confide to when they have problems.
Next, is to understand and know the parent's standard or goal for their child.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
i am still in touch with my school teachers till now.
Moreover, I have many other friends who have benn giving private tuition for years.
Therefore, I will get information through them.
I will also update myself through the MOE website.
I will also communicate with the student to understand what their teacher is teaching and will be teaching.
As a Good Tutor
Firstly, it is to be knowledgeable of the subjects that one is teaching.
Secondly, knowledgeable is one thing but hardwork is important as well. This is to keep updated to the current topics and teaching methods, and doing our own revision in order to prevent ourselves from getting rusty with the concepts etc.
Lastly, it is to understand the student well. And having a goal with the student such that both will work towards it as one. In order to achieve efficient results, it has to be both ways.
