Rapport Building
I will communicate with the parents to get to know about the student more e.g. their strengths and weaknesses, any specific areas that we can work on etc.
With my students, I believe that beyond just delivering what I am supposed to do, it is also important to connect with my students. Hence, I am open to having small conversations to find out more about their interests, hobbies, or any activities they are open to sharing with me, which kind sometimes connect what they're learning in books to the real-world!
Keeping Up with Curriculum
To keep myself updated with the curriculum, I do my research to keep abreast of any syllabus change. Besides asking around and engaging in conversations with my peers (who may be studying/teaching at that particular level) and teachers to find out more about the subject and updates in curriculum, I also go down to bookstores to take a look at assessment books and textbooks to gain a better of the work that students are currently doing.
As a Good Tutor
AS a good tutor, I think it is important to be patient and understanding towards the student. For example, if they are unable to concentrate during lesson, instead of scolding straight away, we need to first understand the reason behind a particular behaviour. When they do not understand a certain concept, we need to be patient. If one method does not work, we could perhaps use a different approach to provide clear, detailed explanations. We should also remain approachable so that the student is comfortable with us and has an ideal environment for learning. Most importantly as a tutor, I think it is important for us to have integrity and be frank with our mistakes. If we are unclear of a concept, we should not attempt to lie and deliver the wrong knowledge to the child.
