Rapport Building
Communication is very important between the student and the tutor, the tutor and the parents, and the student and the parents with regards to the student's progress. I often spend time speaking to the parents for awhile after the session to give them feedback on their child's learning style and pace, as well as getting an understanding of the child's school workload and extra curricular activities to build a tutoring program that will add value to the child's education, and not stress them out even further.

I believe in speaking with the student as a fellow learner and understanding how they learn (whether visually, or aurally), and providing a safe learning environment where the student can ask questions without embarrassment, as well as explaining to the student "using their own language" concepts and techniques. Holistic learning is the emphasis; when the student is equipped to "learn how to learn", their grades will naturally reflect their progress. I believe in taking the student through small increments whatever their level is, to progress to the next stage of learning and understanding.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
Besides knowledge of the subjects, I believe in following the trajectory of the exam questions to be able to highlight keywords and phrases that the students are required to produce in an exam. It is important to go through with the student their school papers as very often it is not that they do not understand the concepts, but lack the accurate wording to express themselves and "hit the check marks" of the question. Key wording and phrases do change progressively over the years, and hence it is important to keep up to date via perusing recent exam material.
As a Good Tutor
Communication, Empathy, realizing that we all were students once, and that everybody learns differently and at a different rate. A good tutor should focus on the person in front of them, and seek to understand their mindset. Knowledge of personalities and parent child dynamics is also important, it takes a village to raise a child, and therefore getting as many perspectives as well as getting everybody involved in encouraging the child to learn at their fullest potential is important.

Finally, patience. Patience will help a tutor handle the most "difficult" of situations, and will help the tutor keep focus on the process and the longer journey the student is taking throughout their school life.
