Rapport Building
Keeping Up with Curriculum
I will usually browse through the updated/revised textbooks and assessment books (endorsed/approved by MOE) to see the current syllabus and also confer with my teacher friends to get an idea of what strategies or techniques are preferred in teaching the students.
As a Good Tutor
A good tutor will try to understand the problems that the student is facing concerning the current syllabus within himself/herself. A good tutor should allow the student to explore his/her own strengths and not compare them to their peers/others so that they do not feel demotivated or insecure. A good tutor should also inspire students to want to do better in school and encourage the students to enjoy learning in a fun and interactive way. Since teachers do not get to dedicate 1-on-1 moments with students frequently, tutors play an important role in making the student feel valued and empowered, no matter the setbacks or progress the students make in their studies.
