Commitment / Other Details
Sometimes it is not your child's inability to learn but how the teaching method is used. My students are happy to see their grades improved and the parents are happier than their child, go figure that
Rapport Building
I normally introduce myself to both the students and parents first and tell them about my teaching style and what my goals for each tuition session are. I make sure, to be honest, and frank in my assessment of my own abilities as well as of the student's current level of knowledge and what I can do to improve this. I personally believe that learning is based very much on one's environment and motivations and as such, I also make the extra effort to talk to the tutee and their parents as well to find out more about the student's learning at school and anything that may be impeding their learning, of course making sure not to overstep my boundaries and ensuring that a professional relationship is still maintained. I normally establish a reward system as well, rewarding the student with gift cards, food, sweets etc, when they do well in their tests so as to incentivize them to continue working towards achieving their academic goals.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
I keep in contact with all my existing teachers and tuition teachers as well as up to date with the latest changes in the global IB and Primary school syllabus in order to teach my existing students. I frequently read and watch the news on Singapore as well to find out any drastic changes to the Singapore education system such as the change of the PSLE. I would then update and change the worksheets and assignments that I came up with to match the current syllabus.
As a Good Tutor
Adaptability and a continued desire to improve oneself. When tutoring, one will meet many different students with different needs and ways of learning. By being adaptable and constantly willing to improve and learn, one can ensure that he continues to provide the very best tutoring he can give catered to the specific needs of each student while helping the student to fulfill the stringent requirements of the local education system.
