Rapport Building
I would normally try to crack a joke to make them laugh before asking them their name and interests. I would sometimes try to relate my childhood with what they are going through to make them understand that certain phases they go through, they aren't going through it alone. Will always listen to them when they do their story-telling to show that I'm interested to know more about their life and that I can also be their friend and not strictly be their tutor/teacher.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
I usually will look through the syllabus provided on MOE sites. Aside from that, I will ask around if I have connections who has kids at a certain age and try to know more about how their classes are being held and what are the topics their teachers will cover.
As a Good Tutor
A good tutor is someone, I believe, who not only can teach well but to also build a strong friendship with the student. At the same time, knowing when to draw the line and when to be serious if need be. Aside from that, a good tutor has to have the ability to ensure the student understands the logic of the topic before the applying what is being taught to them in a problem-solving question.
