Commitment / Other Details
My timing is flexible as I am in insurance. Currently, I am teaching on wednesday evenings and saturday afternoons. I seldom take leave unless there are complusory programs on at the insurace side.
Rapport Building
I build rapport easily as I have been a teacher since 2009. I understand also that students are more motivated when they like you. Having taught primary 1 and 2 students at the centre last year, I have noticed that primary school parents are more anxious about their childrens' performance, and require more assurance. Secondary school children's parents may want to know how they are doing, however, the student has more say in whether he wants to attend tuition, hence, helping the student imporve his result and the student's attitude is also very important. Rapport building is neccessary in my current job, as well as at the centre as sometimes I do speak to the parents, so this area is not an issue with me.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
I keep myself updated through reading about the updates on the MOE website, as well as speaking to friends and my cousin, who is currently an MOE teacher at a secondary school. However, I do not blindly follow the curiruculum. English is very subjective, and I work depending on the student's ability in the language. For example, the centre I currently work at services students from neighbourhood, and most of them have a poor grasp and understanding of English. So I would spend more time on their weaker areas while going through the lesson to helo them improve. I would give them additional exercises in editing and grammar to do, as without a decent foundation, it will be hard for them to progress.
As a Good Tutor
I think every student is different, they have different strenghts and interests, as well as different personalities. A good tutor would be able to assess these and cater to strenghtening their weaker areas as well as making sure the foundation is there, so that they can do well. A good tutor would also be able to motivate them to do their best, instead of beating them down, causing them to lose interest in the subject.
