Tuition/Teaching Experience
I have started tutoring my younger cousin of age 14 years old who is currently studying in Bendemeer Secondary School. I have been helping him with the subjects that he is having difficulty with such as mathematics and sciences. Since he is of blood relationship, i decided not to charge him for any of the tutoring fees. Since my younger cousin was relatively new to the sciences and mathematics taught in secondary school, I started from the very basics for him, ensuring that he has a stronger foundation for the subjects.
Primary level - English Higher Maths Mathematics Science
Lower secondary level - English Mathematics Science
Upper secondary level - A Maths Bio/Chem Chemistry E Maths English Physics Physics/Chem
Commitment / Other Details
As of now, since i am currently waiting for my IB diploma results, i am relatively free and i can start tutoring anytime. Next year on, i will be serving my national service and therefore, i will most probably be able to tutor during the weekends as i am able to book out of camp. Hence, tutoring for the next 2 years will be very possible and highly likely. My timings as of now will be very flexible, therefore suiting to the preferences to the parents and students.
Rapport Building
I will normally build rapport with the students and parents but first having a short meeting with all of them together during the first lesson. During the first meeting, i will discuss with the parents and students on what are the relative goals that the parents would want their kid to achieve and then i would ask what the grades the student will personally want to achieve. After which i will assess the students capabilities in the subject then i will act accordingly. I will update the parents monthly about the students progress and how close or how far they are into achieving the relative goals. My personal contact information will also be passed on to both the parents and students so that they are able to contact me whenever if they have any questions about the progress of their child.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
I keep myself updated with the curriculum by viewing the year end papers being tested. From that, i am able to assess the required skills and topics that is required to do well for the paper and also i will be able to know what is the common trend during the tested examinations. Therefore, i will then tutor the students dependent on my analyse of the year end papers. I will often go to popular bookstore to find latest textbook and then purchase them for tutoring purposes. As such, I will then be able to ensure that i am teaching the student according to the suitable syllabus which are tested. Hence, using such methods, i will then know what is suitable and required to teach the students ensuring that i do not teach any other unnecessary topics which are no longer in the tested syllabus.
As a Good Tutor
As a good tutor, i believe that one should not just care solely about the students education but also his well-being. A tutor should ensure that the work-play balance for the student is balanced out as the saying goes too much work makes jack a dull child. Lessons can be made more interesting by teaching in an interesting manner, linking key concepts with easy understandable real-life situations. This will leave a greater impact on the student and therefore allow them to understand the concept at hand easier and remember them. This will lead to easier application to the work that they are doing.
