Commitment / Other Details
I am able to start immediately and commit till the end of the year. Subsequent continuation is subject to parents' discretion.
Rapport Building
I like to take the time to get to know students before conducting lessons as I believe it would help me identify what teaching methods would be most effective. By knowing the student's personality and attitude towards learning, I can try to create the optimum way to get across to the student such that he/she learns in the most efficient way. I also believe it is important to set expectations and goals from the start so that both the parents and the student have a clear idea of what is to be achieved and how we would work towards that.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
My main approach is to target student's weaknesses in the particular subject and to firstly understand why that area is a weakness versus another topic. By understanding what are the student's strengths and abilities, I would try to engage the student in transferring these abilities across topics so that their weaknesses can be built upon. Also, I make sure to keep ahead or align with the school's curriculum so that the student does not feel like he/she is falling behind and struggling in school. In the scenario that the student is already struggling to keep up in school, I would conduct more intensive sessions where we would tackle blocks of areas bit by bit until the student has mastered the necessary knowledge required.
As a Good Tutor
I think a good tutor is one who tries to understand their students and provide help rather than basically going through the rote curriculum systematically. A good tutor would be able to identify which areas need to be focused on and how to help the student utilise their current knowledge to build up in those areas and consequently expand their knowledge of that particular area. Also, the basics of good tutors would include being patient as mastery of knowledge does take time and each individual student is different.
