If I have a student studying a certain subject, I will read up about the subject before every tutoring session. This is to ensure that I will be updated fully about the current curriculum and will be teaching the correct things to students as well as make full use of the tutoring time.
As a Good Tutor
The basic qualities should be patience, flexibility in teaching methods, a very decent understanding of the subject being taught, as well as responsibility to the student.
