Commitment / Other Details
I am able to start in July 2019 and generally am willing to commit for the duration of one school year. I would prefer to tutor one on one as I believe I do better in small groups.
Rapport Building
As a tutor my job is to improve a student's academic performance. I would first ask the student what are his/her difficulties in the subject, what are the challenges facing him or her. I won't fault them for their previous shortcomings in tests or exams. My goal is to ensure they get the grades they want. If they are uninterested, then its my job to get them to be interested. They don't have to love the subject matter, I understand that as someone who has gone through the local education system. Its not a syllabus that fuels or creates passion.

Instead I will seek to motivate them. Everyone has different means of being motivated, and they may hate the subject because they don't do well in it and we often hate what we are awful at. I tell the student that failing due to not trying is not a good reason. If you try your best and you fail then its not good but its something you can at least you say you did your best in. I know the thrill of suddenly discovering you understand a particular topic or being able to solve a previously unsolvable question.

I would also try to find the best method which they understand best. There are times when the official method can be confusing so I'd ask the student to answer the questions using his/her own methods, that are the correct ways but not necessarily taught by the teacher. The only exception is if a particular question requires it be answered using a specific formula or equation, then we'd have no choice but to understand.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
By looking at the current set of exam papers and textbooks used by MOE. That way I know what's being tested, how it's being tested and what I must teach the student so they can do their best in the exams.
As a Good Tutor
1. Don't place additional stress on the students, the Singapore education system and parent supply enough of that.
2. Find out what's the best avenue of motivating them.
3. Improve the student's grades to the point where they are proud of themselves.
