Rapport Building: Days before the tutoring session, I will WhatsApp the parents a summary of what I will be teaching their child. If the child is older I hope that I will have the student's contact number so that he or she can WhatsApp me any doubts that he or she have regarding their school work. With that, I will be able to prepare for the sessions beforehand to ensure that the time we have together is efficiently spent. If he or she do not have any doubts I will just find questions for him or her to practice on topics that he or she is weaker in. From there I will be able to clear any doubts that they did not even know existed. At the same time if the parents want to be updated with the tutoring sessions I will send them a summary of the upcoming sessions.

Keeping Up with Curriculum: To keep myself updated with the curriculum I will first thoroughly read through the SEAB syllabus document to ensure that the content I will be teaching is in sync with the school. I will also look for assessment books from reliable sources if not past year paper to ensure that the content that I will be teaching is relevant.

As a Good Tutor: I love interacting with children. I enjoy how satisfying it is to inspire them or successfully help them in their studies. With such passion and drive, I will be able to patiently teach the student to successfully clear his or her doubts. As a tutor, I would want to pass down the studying tips that I used a student that were very helpful to me. For example, coming up with stories that link to a concept to help me understand and remember it. I would hope to phrase concepts that they find abstract or hard to remember in ways that they can absorb quickly and easily. Lastly, as a good tutor, I hope to inspire every single one of my student to enjoy learning and thus studying. If not at least not hate studying.

Rapport Building: Although I need to be firm with my students, I also need to be friendly and approachable to them so that they will trust and respect me when I tutor them. Learning more about them will let me adapt my teaching to their learning needs and styles.

Regular feedback with parents is very important. Being able to speak with parents about their child's progress enables the parents to understand how the child is progressing and gives both the parents and me the opportunity to reflect upon the child's learning so that any remedial action can be taken if necessary.

It also builds trust and respect between the parents and me.

Keeping Up with Curriculum: I ensure that I am up to date with the current curriculum by staying tuned to curriculum updates by MOE. I do also read up on all MOE news published in the media so I am familiar with what's happening.

Keeping a current copy of the syllabus and checking for any updates or changes is also important as to revise my teaching materials if necessary.

As a Good Tutor: I believe that first impression counts. So, a good tutor should be able to present himself in a professional manner towards the parents and the child. Other than being professional, he must also have a good rapport with the child, being both firm and friendly.

A good tutor must strive to contribute to the child's success. Every minute spend with the child should be productive and worthwhile with no place for idle time. Always be organised and be prepared to adapt to unforeseen changes in the environment so that the lesson can still carry on with or without minimal disruptions.

To ensure that every lesson is productive, a good tutor should ALWAYS be prepared for the lesson, bringing in his own material, resources and expertise to cater to the child's learning. Do not only depend on the books and materials provided by the child. This will also enable him to answer the child's queries with confidence in a clear and concise way that the child can understand. And to do this, he has to be very clear about the child's learning needs and style.

Last but not least, a good tutor always should praise both the results achieved and efforts put in by the child.
