Tuition/Teaching Experience: Currently studying for B.Sc in Biological Sciences at Nanyang Technological University, I was in the Integrated Programme at Victoria Junior College, joining the college in Sec 3. I have not had the chance to teach older students yet so far, but I am confident in my ability to teach the subjects I have an intuitive understanding for.

Tutoring Subjects

Commitment / Other Details: As a freshman in university, I have various commitments and am currently adapting to university and hostel life. However, I am available on weekends and certain days during the week. Please note that weekday availability will change with each semester.

Rapport Building: An important part of learning is willingness. Students will enjoy lessons more if there is a good relationship with the tutor, thus it is more beneficial if the tutor is friendly (while still able to instill discipline) rather than distant. Communication between the tutor and the parent to inform them of improvements is useful for allowing parents to provide encouragement for the student. There should be a balance between negative reactions such as scolding with positive encouragement and acknowledgement of improvements when their child does not score well, to avoid building resentment of school.

As a Good Tutor: There is more to helping a student than just teaching the subject. Showing your approval and noting small and big improvements alike will go a long way in getting the student to take pride in their work, or pull themselves out of a depressed decline. Setting small goals before big goals can make studying less daunting, and slowly help the student build up confidence.

It is essential to assess the student's extent of knowledge about the subject to know where they need help and to identify their strengths which can be used to encourage them. More importantly, effort should be made to understand why the student is not able to cope with school to better assist them beyond the content of the subject.
