I have taught tuition part time to lower primary students before during my schooling days in poly.
Currently teaching a few students ranging from P2 - P5, have experience for over 2 years.
My teaching style is leaned toward understanding and practicing. I believe the most important thing is to give the student the confidence to accomplish their goals in studies and teach them how to achieve it.
I would normally speak with the parents to find out the expectations that the parents have for their child and for me as a tutor. In addition, I give updates of the student's progress regularly and express any potential issues that I discovered.
As for the student, in the first lesson, I will always do goal setting plans with them and find out more about their interest and thoughts in the particular subject. This would allow me to understand their thinking better and plan my lessons accordingly.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
I regularly check MOE website for the updates on the syllabus and read up on it.
As a Good Tutor
I think a good tutor should be able to communicate effectively with both the parent and child. A tutor must also be able to boost the confidence of the child to allow them to have the confidence to accomplish their goals with determination. Helping them to see the bigger picture of studying is also important.
Many students also do not fully understand the need to study, they just see it as a requirement. If they understand the meaning behind it, they will be more motivated to study and achieve better results.
This not only helps them for their studies, but as a life skill as well. If learned from younger, children will be able to make goals for themselves in life and strive towards it.
