Commitment / Other Details
I am able to start as soon as possible and commit indefinitely.
Rapport Building
In principle I employ the 3Cs: Communication, Commonality and Candor.
1. Communication: I ensure that a clear line of communication is maintained myself and the parents or students by exchanging WhatsApp details and providing immediate feedback as soon as the tutoring session ends.
2. Commonality: With students, I try to find similar topics of interest to ensure that they are comfortable around me. In the past, I recognized some students as being shy and closed off. Therefore, my objective as a tutor is also to make sure they have a safe space to cultivate their curiosity hence allowing myself to teach effectively.
3. Candor: With parents, I would ensure that I am as open, honest and transparent as possible. Meaning, I would ensure that they are at home before starting any tutoring lessons and insist that lessons are held in a public area such as the dining area.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
1. Desktop Research: The main method of keeping up with curriculum is to research into the latest MOE syllabus and SEAB guidelines.
2. Networking with fellow tutors: I would also speak to peers in the industry to keep up with latest developments.
3. Speaking to former teachers: Lastly, I will engage my own teachers who would have insights into the syllabus pipeline.
As a Good Tutor
1. Results Oriented: As a tutor, the overall objective is to improve and elevate the performances of tutees. With sufficient time and resources, I believe a good tutor would show this quality in the long run.
2. Nurturing: As a private tutor, I always believe that it's not just the results that matter, but the way a student approaches study and work matter too. While some students may perceive academic studies as troublesome or tiring, I strive to make my tutees see the value of studying in everyday life and to inspire them to learn new things.
3. Empathetic: The nature of tuition itself is complementary, it is supposed to supplement lessons learned throughout a very tiring day. Hence, I believe a good tutor should have the empathy to understand any tutee's concerns and feelings. An excellent tutor would be able to empathise with the student and tailor a lesson plan accordingly to each tutee's needs.
