Rapport Building
I sincerely believe every child is unique and different, with every potential to shine.
It is important to show care and concern to the child as a person. Once they trust and like the tutor they will be more willing to learn and focus.
For parents i do believe open communication by updating what i observed from the child, what is done with the child and working together in bringing out the best in him/her.
Keeping Up with Curriculum
I am currently working in a student care coaching students from different schools their school homework on a daily basis. This keeps me abreast of the school's curriculum. (eg Which topics are taught during which term 1 -4) (What is required of them at their level; eg P2 Term 3 onward start to learn fractions, creative writing)
As a Good Tutor
A good tutor would show care and concern for the child's well being besides the subject that she is coaching. She should work with the child and ignite interest in learning the subjects that a child may not like. When a child likes the teacher/ tutor, he or she will have this subconscious motivation in learning the subject and drive to do improve.
Lastly, the tutor should find a suitable way (visual /audio) to explain the concepts to the child so that he/she is able to effectively apply it in their subjects especially for math and science.
